IPTV apps are player applications that connect to your IPTV subscription and play its channels, movies and series on a particular device. Which app is "best" depends first on the platform: an app designed for a TV remote can be awkward on a phone, and many apps exist only on certain systems. This guide is organised by device, so you can find the right player for each screen in your home.

For what players do in general — formats, features and troubleshooting — see IPTV player apps explained.

Android TV and Google TV

Android TV devices have the widest choice of IPTV players. TV-focused apps such as TiviMate offer a cable-style grid guide and fast channel switching, designed for a remote. Multi-platform apps such as IPTV Smarters Pro and XCIPTV are also common. Our TiviMate guide and IPTV Smarters Pro guide cover each in detail.

Check: enough free storage for the app's guide data, and an Ethernet connection if you watch 4K.

Amazon Fire TV

Fire TV devices run a version of Android, and several IPTV players are available for them. Availability in the Amazon Appstore varies by device model and region, so search the official store on your device first. The Fire TV Stick 4K is popular for its price; heavier use with large playlists can benefit from a more powerful model.

Check: whether your chosen app is in the official store for your model, and how the remote handles the app's guide.

Samsung and LG smart TVs

Samsung TVs use Tizen and LG TVs use webOS. Each has its own app store, and the selection of IPTV players is narrower than on Android. Some players for these TVs require activation on the developer's website before you can add your playlist.

Check: that the app is available for your specific TV model and year, and whether activation involves a separate fee from the app developer.

Dedicated IPTV boxes

Formuler boxes and MAG receivers are designed around live TV. Formuler devices typically include their own live-TV app, while MAG receivers commonly use a portal-style login tied to the device's MAC address. Not every service supports every login type, so confirm with your provider.

Android phones and tablets

Touch-friendly players work best here. Multi-platform apps are popular because the same login works on the phone and the TV. Remember that mobile data use is high — an HD stream can use several gigabytes an hour — so use Wi-Fi where possible.

iPhone, iPad and Apple TV

Apple's App Store offers a range of IPTV players, and listings change over time. Search the App Store on your device for players that support your login type (Xtream Codes or M3U), and read the developer's description to confirm the app does not include content of its own. Apple TV 4K is a capable device for 4K playback.

Computers

On Windows and macOS, desktop media players and IPTV-specific apps can play M3U playlists, and some services offer a web player. Computers are handy for occasional viewing or testing a playlist, but most households prefer a TV device for everyday use.

How to choose between apps on the same platform

  1. Your login type. Make sure the app supports Xtream Codes or M3U, whichever your provider uses.
  2. Guide layout. Grid for live TV; list if you mostly know what you want.
  3. Speed. How quickly channels switch and the guide loads.
  4. Interface language. Some apps offer French and other interface languages.
  5. Cost. Free, paid or free with paid features — try before paying.
  6. Updates. Recently updated apps are more likely to work with new devices.

Keeping one subscription across several apps

Using different apps on different devices is normal: TiviMate on the living-room TV, a mobile player on the phone. The login belongs to your subscription, not the app. Two rules keep it working:

  • Stay within your plan's number of simultaneous screens.
  • Set favourites, parental PINs and guide offsets on each app separately.

IPTV Cote Nord plans cover 1 to 4 simultaneous screens and list supported devices and apps in the setup section of the homepage. If you need more screens, the pricing page shows the totals.

Staying safe

  • Install apps only from official stores or the developer's official channels.
  • Avoid modified "unlocked" versions.
  • Be cautious with apps that show channels before you add any subscription.
  • Use a unique password for your IPTV login.

When an app is not the problem

Before switching apps because of buffering, test the same channel on another device on the same network. If it stutters everywhere, the cause is more likely Wi-Fi or the internet connection than the app. If it plays smoothly on one device and not another, the slower device's app settings or hardware are the likely culprit. A few minutes of comparison saves reinstalling and reconfiguring for nothing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best IPTV app?

It depends on the device. TV-focused players suit Android TV boxes with a remote; multi-platform players suit households that want the same app on phones and TVs. Try one with your own subscription first.

Do IPTV apps include channels?

No. Apps are players. Channels and guide data come from your IPTV subscription.

Can I use IPTV on a Samsung or LG TV without a box?

Often yes, through apps in the TV's own store, depending on the model. If the app you want is unavailable, a streaming stick is an inexpensive alternative.

Can I use the same IPTV login on my phone and TV?

Usually yes, as long as the total number of devices streaming at once stays within your plan's screen limit.
